Ab Initio Cadet Program

Applications for the August 2013 intake are now closed. Information will be updated on this page in relation to future course intakes.

Course Summary

The Jetstar Ab Initio Cadet Program is delivered as an Associate Degree of Aviation by CAE Oxford Aviation Academy on behalf of Jetstar, and in conjunction with our training partner Swinburne University of Technology.

Candidates are selected to enrol on this course through the CAE Oxford Aviation Academy Skills Assessment and interview process, and a final Jetstar Interview. After successful completion of the course cadet pilots are offered a conditional offer of employment with Jetstar subject to the availability of positions.

The Associate Degree is an intense training program that begins with ab initio training up to and including a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), Multi Engine Command Instrument Rating (MECIR) and Multi Crew Cooperation (MCC) certificate. The advanced training involves a Type Rating (TR) endorsement on the Airbus A320.

Eligible students can access government funding through FEE-HELP.

Minimum Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirements for the Jetstar Cadet Pilot Program are as follows:

  • Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Aged over 17 years on commencement of training
  • Hold a valid CASA Class 1 Medical Certificate
  • Satisfactory completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or its equivalent, with the following subjects forming the prerequisites for the course; VCE Units 3 & 4 - a study score of at least 20 in English (any) and Further Mathematics. Passes may be accumulated over more than one year.

Selection Process

Candidates who successfully meet the selection criteria at the application stage will then be invited to CAE Oxford Aviation Academy at Moorabbin Airport to participate in the Skills Assessment process.

The Skills Assessment process consists of the following components:

  • Day 1 - COMPASS Computer Based Aptitude Testing
    • This tests you on co-ordination, mathematics, memory, orientation, task management, technical aptitude and psychometric profiling.
    • If you meet the required results in each test you will be invited to participate in Day 2 of the Skills Assessment process.
  • Day 2 - Group Exercises and Interview
    • These exercises involve problem solving, verbal reasoning, communication and group discussion.
    • A individual interview, of approximately 30 minutes, with at least two assessors. The aim of the interview is to determine the candidates motivation and suitability for a career in commercial aviation.

If you are selected as a successful candidate at the end of the Skills Assessment process, you will be referred to Jetstar for a panel interview for final selection.

To prepare for enrolment on an aviation program, it is advisable to research the CASA website to understand the process of obtaining a Pilot Licence. It is also recommended to obtain an Aviation Reference Number (ARN) and CASA Class 1 Medical Certificate as these are pre-requisites to commencing flight training. If you have never flown before, it is recommended to undertake a Trial Introductory Flight (TIF) to understand what is involved in the training to become a pilot.
